Sint-Truiden is a Belgian municipality and city situated in the province called Limburg in the Flemish region. It is located at the heart of Haspengouw (Hesbaye), a major fruit producing region in Belgium. Liège Airport happens to be the nearest airport and is only 34 km away. Tourists from all over the world come on cheap flights to Sint-Truiden.
The Stadhuis or the town hall has a tower dating back to the 17th century. This was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The renowned Church of Our Lady exists just next to the town hall and dates back to the 15th century. The béguinage of Sint-Agnes was declared a World Heritage Site and it has a 13th century late Romanesque and also early Gothic church. The church displays a unique and spectacular collection of 38 murals and several pillar paintings.
Another nostalgic vintage tourist attraction is the Festraets’ astronomical clock. This was the brainchild of Kamiel Festraets, made of over 20,000 components in 1937 and is supposed to be the highest ever dial with a height of 6 m. It is on display in an exhibition house at Sint-Truiden’s begijnhof. Other unique creations on display here are a ship demonstrating the effects of tides, Foucault pendulum and a didactic model representing the Earth’s motion around the sun. The abbey tower is a shining example of architectural finesse and skill. There are 196 steps and five platforms. From the top, one could enjoy a spectacular view of the city.
April to October is the peak tourist season. Come here to experience the splendor of the blossoms and aroma of ripe fruits like berries, cherries, strawberries and raspberries in June-July and apples, grapes and pears in September-October. There is a plethora of hotels in Sint-Truiden, so accommodation would never be a hassle for tourists arriving here by the many cheap flights to Sint-Truiden. The Grand Market (Grote Markt) boasts of several pubs, great food, monuments and summer events like ballooning, children’s festivals and many more. Do not miss visiting the Air Base Historical Centre, the military aviation museum. The Academy Hall is a brilliant architectural masterpiece with its octagonal auditorium, which has excellent acoustics ideal for coral music, chamber music and also chamber opera performances.
