Shenyang is a famous historical city, located in the Liaoning province. It houses an imperial palace and two imperial tombs, which were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Shenyang is famous for being the home base of the Qing Dynasty. But it also has many other milestones in history, including the Japanese victory against the Russian army in 1905, the Mukden incident of 1935, and as home to the great warlords of the 1920s, the father-and-son tandem of Zhang Zuolin and Zhang Xueliang.
Although Shenyang grew since then as an important industrial hub, it is continuously sought after by foreign tourists for its historical value.
Shenyang is one of the oldest cities in China with over 2,000 years of history. Much of those 2,000 years were colorful and left marks that are forever etched in the hearts of the people.
There is the Mukden Palace, an imperial palace that was originally built for Nurhachi in 1625. This is but one of the two remaining royal homes existing in the whole of China today. Aside from that, the Mukden Palace offers a splendid architecture. Good thing, the imperial palace has been properly preserved so all the halls and chambers and pavilions can be enjoyed as is.
There is also Fuling, the first of two imperial tombs bearing the body of Nu'erhachi who is the founder of the Qing dynasty. Just like the Mukden Palace, Fuling is constructed in a very attractive and intricate manner.
Zaholing is the second imperial tomb, where Huam Taiji, the second Qing Emperor, and his consorts were laid to rest. It was built around a combination of Manchu style and Chinese architecture.
You might also want to visit the pagodas, which were rebuilt close to the originals. The North, South, East, and West pagodas stand 4 kilometers on their side of the imperial palace.
Since Western, imported dishes cost a good amount of money, it is best to settle for local delicacies when in Shenyang. The city has a local cuisine called Liaocai, which is distinctive for its strong garlic and ginger flavors.
