When visiting Saskatoon, it’s considered a ‘must’ to take a trip to the Wanuskewin Heritage Park, which explores the Plains culture of the indigenous inhabitants, and also serves as an active archaeological dig site, with archaeological findings dating back to 6,000 years ago. The park not only provides information about the Fist Nations people, the indigenous inhabitants, but also features hiking trails, cultural exhibits, reenactments of buffalo hunts, pow wows and native dancing. The site is complete with children’s programming, storytelling and a variety of activities enjoyable for the entire family. It’s a fascinating glimpse at an almost 6,000 year old indigenous culture, and a chance to enjoy the lush native beauty of the area.

Another cultural gem is the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, a small museum which seeks to highlight Ukrainian culture in Canada. The museum boasts a wonderful collection of unique cultural artifacts, such as: clothing, weaving, books, art and tools from Ukrainian immigrants in Canada. Most artifacts were brought directly from Ukraine by the immigrants themselves, and is a thoughtful recommendation for anyone of Ukrainian decent, or anyone interested in exploring rich European culture. The museum gift shop is also much enjoyed and highly recommended for its selection of art and crafts for sale.

The Mendel Art Gallery is an excellent, free art and cultural museum, located on the South Saskatchewan River. Not only is it a short jaunt from the downtown area, but is a gorgeous building featuring a variety of local, regional and national works of art, in a variety of media, including: paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings. It’s modernly designed building pays homage to the vast amount of modern art that the museum is famous for.

If you’re into shopping, The Mall at Lawson Heights is the place for you. In addition to name brand outlets such as Body Shop, Claire’s and California Pizza Kitchen, there is also an excellent assortment of local and national retailers, offering a unique and eclectic shopping experience for tourists not familiar with the area.

Last but not least, Saskatoon has seven professional golf courses, ranging from beginning to advanced levels. With a variety of different course to choose from, Saskatoon is the golf-lover’s paradise. So tee up, grab your caddy and your golf cleats, and hit one of the seven local courses.
