There are many attractions located both in and around San Ignacio. Some of the attractions include Ancient Mayan ruins of Caracol, Xunantunich, and El Pilar. Caracol is a large ancient Mayan archaeological site that is located in the Cayo District in Belize. It is located about 25 miles south of Xunantunich and is about 10 miles from the Macal River. This site was one of the most important regional and political centres of the Mayan Lowlands during the Classic Period. Caracol itself covers approximately 125 square miles which is more than what Belize currently covers.

Xunantunich is another archaeological site located in western Belize. Xunantunich means “Stone Woman” and refers to the ghost of a woman who is dressed in all white and has red glowing eyes. She appears in front of El Castillo, moves up the stairs, and then disappears into a stone wall. The actual site itself was a civil ceremonial centre of Maya in the late and terminal Classic periods. Another amazing archaeological site is El Pilar. This is an ancient Mayan city centre located on the Belize-Guatemala border. El Pilar started being constructed in 800 BC. The name means “watering basin” which reflects the abundance of water in the area, a rarity in the Mayan world.
