Den Bosch was established by Duke Henry I of Brabant in 1185 by charter and went through a series of tumultuous historic events that has lent the town its unique character and heritage monuments, fortifications, statues, and churches; the most famous of them being perhaps the De Moriaan, a fortress built in the 13th century that is the country’s oldest brick structure that now houses the city’s tourist information office and an exhibition of reproductions of the works of the famous painter Hieronymus Bosch. The Town Hall is architecturally-rich with a striking clock incorporating mechanical figures of mounted knights participating in a tournament and a tower featuring a 35-bell carillon. Inside the building, you will find wall paintings by Antoon Derkinderen and Max van den Gucht tapestries. St Janskathedraal (St John's Cathedral), a Gothic early 13th-century construction, is another of the town’s tourist attractions. On the north-eastern side, you can find Zwanenbroederhuis that is the centre of Illustre Lieve Vrouwe Broederschap established in 1318.
A stroll through Hinthamerstraat will reveal a number of historic gabled buildings, including the country’s oldest psychiatric clinic. The Museum of North Brabant has wonderful collections of Germanic, Frankish and Roman antiquities, pictures, drawings, manuscripts, coin, and maps that are a magnet for historians.
