About Rio Tinto

The Portuguese parish and city of Rio Tinto is situated in Gondomar Municipality in the northern side of Portugal. The city covering an area of 9.5 square kilometers has a population of 50,762 according to the 2011 census.

In Portuguese, Rio Tinto means red river and its elevation to the status of a city was achieved in 1995. There are two parishes of Rio Tinto city – Rio Tinto and Baguim do Monte and with 65,000 inhabitants, it is the most populous city of Gondomar and Grande Porto or Greater Oporto’s third largest city.
