About Reims

The two things that probably characterize the best the city of Reims are champagne and the Notre Dame Cathedral. These are however just two of the things you should not miss when you travel to Reims. Do not neglect to visit other monuments such as the Basilica of Saint-Remi and a few museums.

The City of Champagne

Reims, it is above all the city of champagne, so it’s a great place to enjoy the bubbly liquor. Most areas of the city have shops that open their cellars to visitors. You will also discover the course of this extraordinary wine, from the selection of grapes to the design of bottles. Actually, thousands of people book flights to Reims every year just to see with their own eyes how champagne is made.

Pommery

The site is a particularly interesting one in Reims. Indeed, with its neo-English buildings, it appears as a separate domain. Moreover, it is built over one hundred and twenty caves in the Gallo-Roman era, in which the temperature is ideal for wine maturation.

Monuments and Museums

The Notre-Dame Cathedral is a jewel of Gothic art that does not fail its reputation as both the outside than the insides are exceptional. You can only be charmed by the no less than 2303 statues that decorate the cathedral. The west facade, the reverse of the same facade and stained glass windows are decorated by Marc Chagall. If you love religious landmarks, visit the Basilica of Saint-Remi and the eponymous museum, located in the former Benedict royal abbey. The chapter house - where the monks gathered to make important decisions - is really beautiful. It is equipped with capitals surmounting columns that are exceptionally fine. Finally, if you have time, do not forget to stop by the Museum of Fine Arts.

Reims is a city rich in monuments, some of which are not to be missed. Thus, dating from the third century, you can visit the cryptoporticus located under the present Place du Forum. There is a U-shaped tunnel, which is now half buried. Its existence was not discovered until 1838, and was updated in 1923. Do not miss the triumphal arch, one of the largest in the Roman world, which marked the entrance to the city. It consists of three arches, from which the interior one, now badly damaged, was carved.

Museums

There are plenty of museums to visit in Reims and you should probably start with the Museum of Saint-Rémi, which is located in the former buildings of the Benedictine Royal Abbey. The rooms are organized according to four themes: the history of the Abbey, Reims in the Gallo-Roman period, regional archaeology and military history. The highlight of the tour is undoubtedly the chapter house, dating from the Middle Ages.

The Museum of Fine Arts is also an interesting step of your stay in the capital of Champagne. Among the works not to be missed, there are two sets of painted cloth, from the Hotel Dieu de Reims and dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, a series of thirteen portraits of Cranach the Elder Cranach the Younger and twenty- seven works of Italian painter Joseph Corot. Finally, visit the Vergeur museum-hotel, where you will learn more about the lifestyle of bourgeois Reims in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

If you are one of the people who choose to travel to Reims for discovering the wonders of wine and champagne, there are many places where you can try this.
