You can begin your tour in Reading by visiting Reading Abbey Ruins and Forbury Gardens. The former is a huge, ruined abbey located at the heart of Reading. Henry I was the founder and benefactor of this abbey. Some of the buildings in the abbey exist even today, like the Gateway and St. Laurence’s Church. The abbey also consists of the burial site of the king of England. The Forbury Gardens, on the other hand, is a formal garden that is nationally acclaimed.

If you are interested in history, visit the Museum of Reading, located in Victorian Town Hall. It basically tells about the history of the city and its industry. It consists of a gallery of artifacts that was excavated at Silchester Roman town, the replica of Bayeux Tapestry, and a good collection of art.

The Basildon Park is a spectacular Palladian manor that was built between 1776 and 1783. The mansion was designed by John Carr of York. Its interior is adorned with elegant staircases and fine plaster work. It also comprises pleasure grounds and way-marked trails along the parkland.

Cheap flights to Reading should also be taken to view the River Thames which flows through the southern part of England. It is England’s longest and UK’s second longest river. You can have a walk or cycle along the Thames Path, a 26 km long national trial, beginning at Kemble and ending at Thames Barrier in Charlton. Most of this path is towpath allowing you to enjoy the view and breezy ambiance along River Thames.

An evangelical Anglican church, Greyfriars Church, was a former Franciscan friary. This is UK’s oldest Franciscan church that is still in use. The English heritage has also listed it as a Grade I building. The motto of the church is ‘To know Christ and make Him known’.
