The great Raigarh Fort is a hill fortress that is popular among Indian tourists. It is one of those places that are pretty hard to miss because of its pristine beauty and rich historical past.
A Maratha king by the name Shivaji take possession of the fort in mid-1600s. When he got hold of the fort, he had it renovated and expanded to make up Raigad Fort or the King’s Fort. Since the construction, it was made to be the center of Shivaji kingdom. In early 1800s, the fort was attacked by the East India Company. What remained after the attack is now considered a great place for tourist adventure, which is even considered the Gibraltar of the East.
The Raigarh Fort has many interesting features. For one, there is the attention-grabbing statue of Shivaji Maharaj. For another, there is the surrounding natural beauty.
When you take cheap flights to Raigarh Fort, make sure that you keep your eyes open starting from the entrance to the ruins. The fort is only accessible to one side as all the other three sides are surrounded by great valleys, featuring lush greeneries and splendid sights.
From the entrance, you will be treated to an amazing display of ruins, which include the citadel, the queen’s quarters, Shivaji’s memorial for his pet dog Waghya, the base village, and the two-storey towers.
Food is not abundantly available at the fort. But, there are some shacks that sell local fare. Make sure to bring along your own bottled water and some snacks or power cookies to ease your hunger while exploring the great walls.
Another good tip for those taking cheap flights to Raigarh Fort is to schedule the visit from October to February. The climate is pleasant during those months, which will give you the best opportunity to see the sights within the ruins in a much better light.
There are no hotels in Raigarh Fort slated at the exact site. There are accommodation options available around it, however, from which you can start your exploration.
