About Pyongyang

Pyongyang is the capital city of North Korea. Its name means "flat land" and sometimes literally means "Peaceful Land". It is also known as Ryugyong which means land of the Willows as the willow trees grow in abundance in the area. It is also called as “The Jerusalem of the East” by Christian Missionaries that had successfully spread the Protestantism religious belief.

Pyongyang has a unique approach when it comes to tourism. Since North Korea is a communism stronghold, tourism here is more of like a guarded tour with government controlled tours. The main attractions of the city include Pyongyang's skyline, a showcase of its economic and financial state. The Juche Tower is the first in the list of a government-controlled tour. It depicts the Juche Idea which was the thesis of Kim II Sung which the main concept is the spirit of self-reliance where the Korean masses are the masters of the country. The next stop is the Kumsusan Memorial Palace followed by the Arch of Triumph. Visiting the Tomb of Dongmyeong and the Arch of Reunification is also a must. The tour usually ends in Puhung Station to witness the splendid transit transport in Pyongyang.

Pyongyang takes pride of its traditional cuisine. Visitors get the chance to taste Pyongyang naengmyeaon cold noodles. It is traditionally a noodle dish with cold broth. Visitors are also served with Taedonggang sungeoguk, a soup with trout as the main ingredient cooked in black peppercorn and salt. It is a dish serves only to an important guest. This is where the usual welcome greeting" how was the trout soup" after a visit in Pyongyang originated.

To reach Pyongyang, you have to take your cheap flights to Beijing, Moscow, Bangkok Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait City and Shanghai as the State-owned Air Koryo serves only flights originating from these cities. Although it has another airport intended to serve international flights, Airport Merin is an empty airport that has never been used. It was only in 2008 that Air China opened cheap flights to Pyongyang.

Accommodation in Pyongyang is also controlled by the government with two major hotels operated by the State. You can either choose between Yanggakdo International and Koryo International. These hotels are for foreign tourists only. Yanggakdo is the tallest building but once the third state-owned hotel in Pyongyang, the Ryugyeaong is completed, it will be the tallest available for Pyongyang tourists.
