There are a number of museums that can be the most fascinating way of discovering the heritage of this historically-important region. The Cucuteni Neolithic art museum is dedicated to the amazing Neolithic Cucuteni civilisation. You can view a remarkable collection of folk costumes, pastoral artefacts and traditional art of Bistrita Valley peasants. The History Museum contains displays of archaeological finds from the cultures of Bronze and Geto-Dacian Eras. At the Art Museum, you can spend hours admiring paintings, graphic art and sculpture made by some of the most exceptional Romanian artists. The Natural Sciences Museum has an engrossing collection of fish fossils and other zoological and botanical displays. To explore all these at leisure, putting up at one of the many hotels in Piatra Neamt is a good idea.
Among the more significant historical sites are the Princely Court of which only the remnants of the wall and cellars remain, and the Bâtca Doamnei Fortress that dates back to 1st century BC; the only way of visiting this is to climb up the tent-shaped mountain, following directions from the locals. The massive Casa Paharnicului, an early 19th century building, once used for storing goods is now a bustling restaurant. The beautiful Lalu House presently houses the Children’s Palace. St. John Church is a lovely Moldavian-style stone building with a 19-meter tall tower. Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului is a rare structure carved out of fir trees standing on a base of stone; the altar-screen is fashioned out of oak and lime tree wood and is considered to be a masterpiece of Romanian art.
