About Petapa

Petapa is a town in Guatemala 9 miles away from the national capital, which is Guatemala City. If you book cheap flights to Petapa, you will be saving a considerable amount of travel money. Petapa or San Miguel Petapa is not much of a tourist town though given the near proximity it has with the capital city. It is famous primarily for the Dance of the Flowers Festival held every October, which is also the feast day for their patron, St. Michael the Archangel. From the airport, you can take a taxi to your hotel or point of destination in Petapa. You can order tickets for cheap flights to Petapa from your online travel agents.

Petapa’s primary industry comes from its agricultural products like coffee, vegetables and corn, which are the primary crops of Central America. They are also famous for their Tun Mats; indigenously made fabrics that are sold in several markets around Petapa. The town is not your typical tourist destination, so there’s not much to see. The Church of Saint Michael, which boasts of a Spanish Gothic colonial architecture is the primary landmark in the area. The town is also the gateway to Amatitlan, the largest duty-free area in the Guatemala capital region.

Yearly, Petapa holds two kinds of festivals, which are both dedicated to their patrons. The first feast is held every February in honor of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. The second feast, on the other hand, is held in honor of their main patron, which is Saint Michael the Archangel. It’s every October that they hold their Dance of the Flowers, which is popular in the region. It boasts of colorfully clothed dancers that roll in and roll out while dancing, singing and reciting verses. The festival clearly displays their cultural heritage as mixed with their indelible Spanish influences.

If you’re looking for hotels in Petapa, you would mostly stumble on B&B’s. If you want a real hotel with more amenities, you can stay at cities and towns around Petapa. The B&B’s are not that bad, though. Finca Cabañas is just located along the highway of San Miguel Petapa. Besides the accommodations, they also have a mini bar with their small swimming pool to cool down a bit from the tropical climate in Central America. You can also find other B&B’s like Finca Moran and Finca El Zapote along the way.
