About Otsu

One afternoon, a young man walks into the bridge of Seta Karahashi in Otsu-shi, going over his plans of conquest. He looks at the waters in Setagawa River and sees his coming victory. In the future, he emerges as one of the most remembered Shoguns in Japanese history: Oda Nobunaga.

Otsu is the capital of Shiga Prefecture in Japan. Many people might not know the city, but it was the capital of Japan on an earlier time, even before Kyoto was the Japanese capital. It was on a strategic land and water position that during the early times, any shogun who can claim Otsu claims all of known Japan. With such history in store, there is no excuse for you not getting any cheap flights to Otsu-shi right now. It’s an experience worth waiting for anyone who wants to experience old Japan. Otsu does not have any airport yet, and the nearest airports are Osaka and Kansai International Airport. You can take an airport limousine to Kyoto and ride the JR Biwa Line. You can search for cheap flights to Otsu-shi online.

Otsu is proud to have a World Heritage Site with the Mt. Hiei Enryaku-ji Temple, the head temple of Tendai Buddhism. It was burned by Oda Nobunaga, but was restored by succeeding shogunates. Today, it stands as a testament to the majesty and prestige that was once the former capital of Japan. You can also see Ichiyama-dera Temple where it has been said that Murasaki Shikibu wrote the plot of the Japanese literary classic “Tale of Genji” in the said temple. Not far is the Gichi-ju Temple where Japanese Haiku master Matsuo Basho’s grave lies. You can also take the Lake Biwa Cruise and Setagawa River Cruise to see more of Otsu onboard. Lake Biwa also has fine beaches for canoeing, snorkeling and swimming.

There are many posh hotels in Otsu-shi surrounding Lake Biwa. If you want to stay at a budget hotel, try looking for hostels or inns near the Otsu train station. There are also a number of decently priced hotels in the middle of the city. If you are travelling to this city, you might need a bit more money for the accommodations because classier hotels outnumber budget hotels, and they all concentrate near Lake Biwa.
