Oosterhout that derives its name from the Dutch words “ooster” meaning "eastern" and “hout” meaning "woods" is situated in southern Netherlands. Oosterhout has a hoary past; there is archaeological evidence of prehistoric settlements and a temple was dedicated by the Templars to St. John, the Baptist. Later, a castle was established there that took control of the region right up to Bergen op Zoom and Breda; this was subsequently destroyed in 1573 during the Eighty Years War by the Spanish so that the magnificent edifice which was restored many times is survived only by a tower presently. In the Middle Ages, Oosterhout was among the principal military bases of the Knights of St John; even today, the town comprises lots of granges that have stood the test of time. Some of the other historic sites at Oosterhout include St Janskerk church, a Gothic monument built in the 15th century that features some lovely stained glass, and St. Paul’s Abbey, a residence of the Benedictine monks involved in pottery manufacture, picture restoration and orchid growing. St Catharinadal’s convent founded in 1600 is presently the provost’s residence. The Toy Museum is extremely popular for its large assembly of toys belonging to the period 1600-1950. The Nationaal Automobiel museum (National Automobile Museum) at nearby Raamsdonksveer traces the history of the development of automobiles from its early days to 1971; there is a huge collection of cars of various types.
