A major port and, in fact, Algarve’s largest fishing port is Olhão. The Moorish-style houses lend full character to the town. During early times, the town was commercially linked with Africa. However, it had remained a small fishing settlement. During the 19th century, the town got prominence and importance. The town now boasts of many faces and many people catch cheap flights to Olhão to enjoy the variety offered there.

It was constructed to defend the town from pirates in 1679. There is a paved and pleasant promenade called Jardim Pescador do Olhanense with cool gardens that is perfect for taking nice walks. Those who want a taste of the local produce can visit the two market buildings on the water front where they can get sea food, fresh fish, fresh vegetables and fruits.
Not only is the town full of shady haunts and lovely cafes where people can enjoy all the wonderful sceneries but there are plenty of historical monuments to explore as well. At the town’s very centre, at Avenida da Republica’s end, is situated the church Nossa Senhora da Rosario. Fishermen contributed for its construction which was finished in 1698. At that time, it was Olhão’s first stone building. The graceful building has a beautiful baroque façade.
Just behind the church is located the mutual society of fishermen called the Compromisso Maritimo founded in 18th century. The Olhão city museum is also nearby and Nossa Senhora do Rosario’s statue is located just above the doorway.
Nossa Senhora da Soledade’s chapel is another church which should be visited. This 17th century church is the then fishing village’s original church.
At a short distance from Olhão is the Ilha da Culatra which has beautiful clear water surrounding it. The place can be reached by ferries and the various species of fish make the place perfect for snorkelling and diving. Other such places that can be visited by ferries are Ilha da Armona and Ilha do Farol.
