Japan has produced a number of literary greats that Japanese literature has been extensively studied in creative writing classes around the world. You have Natsume Soseki and his naturalistic novels, Ryonosuke Akutagawa’s stories, the anthology of early Japanese Haikus and Tankas, and more contemporarily, Haruki Murakami. However, what most Japanese remember of their literary heritage is Matsuo Basho, the master Haiku poet. In Ogaki he started and ended a literary journey, the Oku no Hosomichi. The exact path he walked now is laid with 22 tablets inscribed with Basho’s haikus, and is now a popular pilgrimage site as well.
If you want peace and quiet while creatively exploring yourself, Ogaki is a great place. From Komaki Airport or from Kyoto International Airport, you need only take the JR Central Line to Ogaki JR station. Komaki Airport in Nagoya is much closer than Kyoto, if you’re coming from out of Japan. Even right now, you can book cheap flights to Ogaki online.
The Mini Oku no Hosomichi is a 2.2 km trail along the Suimon River. One can see inscriptions of Basho’s haikus along the trail, and by the end a museum where a fan might see the actual written haikus on the museum. The whole Mino area owes its literary legacy to the genius of Matsuo Basho. Other than a literary heritage, Ogaki is also proud of its freshwater resources that flow in springs. Go to Kagano Hachiman Shrine where you can drink cold, underground freshwater. You can also take a kayaking cruise to Suirei Lake, or brave the hanging bridge crossing Makita River at Tara Valley. Because of its lively waterways, Ogaki prides itself a “City of Water”. Flowers like irises, chamomiles and cherry blossoms also bloom around the city. All of these peaceful areas of rest make cheap flights to Ogaki more valuable.
Most hotels in Ogaki are not budget hotels, though. Hotels and ryokans like Gifu Miyako Hotel and Loisir Hotel Ogaki are much familiar among tourists. However, you can still find manageably priced hostels near train stations and other convenient places. Ryokans are a much promoted area for stay at Ogaki.
