About Nukus

Nukus is the 6th biggest city in Uzbekistan. This city is also the capital of Karakalpakstan Republic, which is an autonomous region in the country. You can spend a day or two here because based on the standards of Uzbeks, the town is fairly dilapidated due to environmental concerns. There is a river passing through the western portion of the town called Amu Darya. The development of Nukus as a modern city during the times of the Soviet Union, but after the collapse, the town suffers problems environmentally from the contamination in the nearby Aral Sea.

As a foreign tourist here, you can enter the city through the Nukus Airport that mainly serves domestic flights. Your main point of entry can be the Tashkent International Airport or in the Domodedovo International Airport in Moscow. There are some cheap flights to Nukus via these routes. By plane, you can have a good view of the Kyzyl Kum desert. If you do not want to travel by plane from Tashkent to Nukus, you can take the train; but the train only provides services to Nukus Station twice a week. If you want to get around, you can hire taxi.
