Nijkerk is a stunningly picturesque and historic town in the Genderland province of central Netherlands that offers a whole host of facilities and attractions. A new church built in place of the one that was devastated by a fire in 1221 lends the town its name that translates to “new church”. Nijkerk is a beautiful town with three cores: historic Nijkerk town and villages Hoevelaken and Nijkerkerveen. All three have their own character and are surrounded by a stunning landscape. It is not difficult to figure out why so many tourists visit this place, especially with the cheap flights to Nijkerk available from all over. Amsterdam’s international airport is just 66 km away.
Nijkerk lies on the Veluwe. This area is a paradise for walkers and cyclists because of the beautiful and virtually endless stretch of picture-perfect nature, peace and cosy villages. Additionally, the marina at New Hulckesteijn provides a fascinating variety of water activities. New Hulckesteijn, adjacent to a small marina, is uniquely situated with a rural view of Flevopolder and is named after a castle along the Zuiderzee that has since disappeared under water. There are some beautiful sandy beaches where you can sunbathe and swim in the shallow waters of Nijkerkernauw. It is not unusual to find tourists coming in with the plentiful cheap flights to Nijkerk only to enjoy the outdoor recreational facilities.
In the middle of the Arkemheen polder is a unique monument, the pumping station that was in operation for 100 years till 1983 and is now restored. The Oud Nijkerk museum is a repository of the region’s heritage and hosts regular exhibitions on various themes. A number of events are continuously held to celebrate the town’s 600th anniversary. The town is a shoppers’ delight with a huge diversity of shops, big and small. The traditional market every Friday offers a wide range of products such as bread, cake, cheese, fruit and vegetables, clothing and leather goods. Eating out can be a wonderful experience; the town has innumerable restaurants and cafés with an eclectic selection of regional and international menus. The abundance of good hotels in Nijkerk as well as excellent camping facilities makes enjoying a weekend in the town all the more enticing.
