There are so many reasons why South Africa should be your next foreign destination. It has a very good weather all year round which means you can enjoy a great yet amazingly cheap outback adventure. But this country does not just have the usual safari voyages and nature hikes. Mining is one of the sources of this country’s wealth. While the town of Kimberley is where diamond quarrying occurs, Nigel has its gold. Cheap flights to Nigel are available via the airport in Johannesburg.
Nigel is located in East Rand, the industrial arm of the biggest city in the country – Johannesburg. Believe it or not, the town was flocked to by mining prospectors after reading Sir Walter’s Scott book ‘The Fortunes of Nigel’. Lucky for them too since there was indeed an abundance of gold and other minerals in the area.
If you are done with the usual mining tours, try visiting the Marievale Bird Sanctuary. This is a large wetland region where you can find over 3,000 different bird species. Include the Diepkloof Museum, a restored farmhouse, to your trip as well. Hike at Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. Check out their libraries, the Dunnoter and Alra Park. Most vacationers enjoy the indigenous eco-epicurean tours which teach visitors how to travel, eat and drink without having a large, negative impact on the environment. Here, you can try the Zulu, Khoi and San cuisines.
But if you want to dine in the usual way, there are several restaurants which are serving all the indigenous dishes and so many others. You might find all these in various hotels in Nigel as well. Jansen Boutique Manor and Lord’s Signature Hotel are two of the most highly reputed hotels which can set you back over a hundred bucks a night. But if you want cheaper accommodation try small guest houses and bed and breakfasts for just $20 to $30. Aside from shopping, one of the things people come for in Nigel is wine tasting.
Finding cheap flights to Nigel won’t be such a difficulty since it is only 65 kilometers from Johannesburg. It would only take about 4 to 5 hours’ drive from the OR Tambo International Airport.
