Ribbon Jutphaas on the west side of the Rhine Vaartse along the main waterway between Utrecht and Lek is home to the former town hall of the municipality Jutphaas, a former inn, an old forge, and the complex around Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. From the quay Jutphaas, you look out on Outside Rijnhuizen that is now part of the FOM Institute for Plasma Physics. The house dates back to as early as 1637. The complex is the only one remaining of the series of castles which were located along the old ontginningsweg. The Fort Jutphaas, built in 1820, features a large green ground, shelters for gunstock and warehouses and a wine shop in the former bombproof guardhouse. The impressive lock complex Vreeswijk, now not in use after the construction of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, has an important recreational and tourist value.
Historical Circle Nieuwegein, dedicated to historical studies of the region, has an impressive collection of records and also organises lectures and excursions. The Fear Wijks Museum located at Fort Vreeswijk is dedicated to the history of navigation and has a permanent exhibition and work in Vreeswijk. The Shipyard Buitenweg that ceased to exist after operating for 145 years with the handover to the Municipality of Nieuwegein is now known as Museum Yard Vreeswijk after a major renovation; it is now an open working museum that also exhibits historic ships being repaired and restored. Lovers of history will find it worthwhile to come by any of the cheap flights to Nieuwegein that are available from all parts of the world. Like most of the towns in the Netherlands, this too is extremely hospitable with a large variety of hotels in Nieuwegein available easily.
