Nara-shi, or simply Nara, is one of the many things you can do while you are exploring the areas of Kyoto. It is a nice side trip that will give you that ancient appeal minus the sleepiness. In fact, Nara is a lively town. It offers enigmatic attractions that will sweep you off your feet.
First on the list is Horyu-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a grand complex of a temple located in the outskirts of the city. Here lies the oldest pagoda and the oldest wooden building Kon-do.
It is important to make sure that your cheap flights to Nara-shi will allow you at least three full days of exploration. One day is definitely not enough to see everything. Nara Park, for one, needs a whole day to tackle. This wonderful attraction houses shrines and temples, giant statues and museums, and of course, a primeval forest that features different animal species. Everywhere in Nara Park, you will see deers and luscious greeneries. This space is truly nature’s gift.
Various annual events are also worth visiting here in Nara. There is the Mount Wakakusa Fire Festival, which features a great display of fireworks every 2nd of January. Shuni-e is another annual festival, held every March 1-14. This is a Buddhist memorial service that features priests with flame torches running around in Nigatsu-d?. Nara Toka-e is another important festival. It is held every year, August 1-15, wherein 10,000 candles are lit around Nara Park as well as the more popular temples. The Dee-horn Cutting Ceremony is another crowd-drawer. Every October, horns are cut from deers to prevent them from injuring people.
Aside from finding cheap flights to Nara-shi, there are many other ways that you can save on this trip. You may want to go for a walking tour. The city is best explored on foot, anyway. Also, you may find cheap hotels in Nara-shi that do not come “cheap” in terms of service. Budget accommodations start at ¥2300. Some even comes with bike rentals, meals, and more.
