Comoros may not be the best tourist destination in the Indian Ocean since it belongs to the poorest in terms of economy but this country undeniably possesses some of the best that nature can offer. The whole region is a nature paradise nestled in a lush green environment and despite the economy; tourists still favor spending a day or two in this charming tropical country to unwind and forget their problems for a while.
If you happen to visit Comoros for the first time, make it a point to check out the island of Anjouan, especially the city of Mutsamudu. This city is the second largest in Comoros and it has played quite a role in the history of Comorian politics since it is the birthplace of the former president Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi. Cheap flights to Mutsamudu are available via the airport in Anjouan but if you’re coming from Mayotte, you can also reach Mutsamudu by boat. Taxi is a common form of transportation and rental cars are also available.
Mutsamudu does not have a lot of popular tourist attractions but you can have a great time visiting Mosque du Vendredi and other religious places. You can also check out the historic Sultan’s Palace with its 15th century beauty or the famous Dziancourdre Waterfall. The water port in Mutsamudu also has a fascinating view during sunset as well as the city’s ancient citadel. There are no museums nearby so it’s best to have a one-on-one chat with the locals if you took cheap flights to Mutsamudu to learn local tradition and culture. Shops selling souvenirs, jewelries, wood works and other crafts are scattered at the city streets. Also, don’t forget to taste some of the best tasting local cuisine while in Mutsamudu. The locals here know a variety of sumptuous fish and meat dishes that you can find only in this city.
You may not have a lot of choice when it comes to hotels in Mutsamudu but you can have a relaxing overnight stay at Hotel Al Amal. The Maponge Palace Hotel and Le Relais de Moya also provide cheap but comfortable accommodation.
