Tanzania may not be the first country that you will think of when planning for an exciting journey but if you want a different kind of adventure, this country is definitely worth visiting especially if you like going to exotic places. At its southeastern part, the city of Mtwara located in the region of the same name is a relatively safe destination particularly if you’re planning to spend a day or two alone in the area. With its close proximity to major cities, cheap flights to Mtwara can easily be found from many travel agencies servicing the region. You can even book for a flight online by checking the airlines that have flights to the city.
Though generally underdeveloped, the city has a lot to offer to visitors with its good landscape, incredible wildlife, nice culture and rich history. Buses are coming and going in the city daily so transportation is really not a problem. Those who want to get around Mtwara easily can rent a bike or ride tuk-tuk and piki-piki for less than a dollar. Traveling on foot is also possible but you need to be careful when going alone after dark.
Mtwara is originally designed to be a main exporter of groundnuts but with the collapsing of this scheme, the city became neglected and it eventually became underdeveloped. Despite this, the city still has plenty of interesting historic attractions like the partially ruined old prison and the coral-stoned Aga Khan Building which is now used as a nursery school. Those who take cheap flights to Mtwara can also enjoy the Msimbati Bay which is a very prominent attraction in the city with its selection of different water activities. It is also a home to the breathtaking Mnazi Bay Marine Park which is a favorite destination of water sport enthusiasts.
There won’t be a problem spending the night in Mtwara since there are plenty of guesthouses all over town especially near the bus stations. Rates vary depending on your preferences and how much you can pay. There are also good hotels in Mtwara if you’re willing to spend a little. For $50 you can get a room overlooking the Mikindani Bay at Msemo Hotel. Or a slightly lower priced room at Ten Degrees South Hotel.
