About Mitaka

Mitaka-shi has been founded as a city in Tokyo in the 1950. It is a few miles away from Tokyo central wards. Some of government buildings are located in the city like the Japanese’s national Astronomical Observatory. The city foremost river canal is Tamagawa Josui which flows along the side of Mitaka Station.

Many schools and universities are found in Mitaka-shi. The most prominent university of Japan, University of Tokyo (to-dai) Astronomy and Faculty of Science is found here.

From Mitaka station you can take the bus going to Ghibli museum. The round trip ticket will cost you around Y200. To get a discount you pay exact 200 for round trip ticket as each one way ticket will cost you around 160 Yen. Make sure you keep your hands off from your camera when touring inside the museum as picture taking is prohibited. Once you're on the second level, take out your camera and take picture The Robot from the Ice Castle. It is the most photograph piece in the museum.

From the museum, you can stroll to Inokashima Park and enjoy the Japanese gardens that allow you to relax and have a peaceful people watching galore.

Just because you can find cheap flights to Mitaka-shi, don't expect to buy cheap goods here. Remember it is near Tokyo and prices here are only some fractions lower than Tokyo's.

If you want to stay in Mitaki to witness Sakura (cherry Blossoms) in Inokashima Park, make sure you stay in one of the many hotels in Mitaki-shi near Mitaka station. This will allow you to be on the exact tome to witness the cherry blossom in full bloom. Inokashima Park is one of the best places to witness and see cherry blossoms.

In Inokashima you can buy Japanese souvenirs to bring back home. Most of these souvenirs are made of Japanese wood decorated with traditional Japanese arts and painting. There is only one sitting restaurant here but it serves foods using home grown ingredients and cooked home-style.

Mitaka-shi is near Tokyo so it is understandable to have high cost of living.
