Middelburg, in south-western Netherlands, is the capital of Zeeland province and has a history that dates back to the 8th century when it was established to counter the Viking raids. Today, it is a bustling university town that retains its old-world charm and is popular for its scenic beauty and lovely seaside. There are lots of cheap flights to Middelburg being just 89 km away from Antwerp’s international airport.
The market square in the city centre is dominated by the presence of the Oude Stadhuis (Old City Hall), a magnificent Gothic architectural piece. The abbey complex of Onze-Lieve-VrouwAbdij (Our Dear Lady Abbey) comprising a couple of churches, a tower and the Zeeuwse Museum is a must-visit. After climbing up the 207 steps in the tower, you are rewarded with a spectacular view of the city and its surrounds. The Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) blends impeccably with the Koorkerk (Choir Church) that has a 17th century intricately-carved pulpit from Amsterdam’s Zuiderkerk. The Zeeuws Museum is a treasure house of Zeeland artefacts and works of art from different parts of the world, the highlight being the famous Zeeuws tapestries comprising six panels narrating the conflict with Spain during the legendary 80 Years’ War. A walk on cobblestone street maze in Kuiperspoort reveals a grand show of some of the loveliest brick architecture ever to be found. Many tourists have found it worthwhile coming here for just for a day via any of the cheap flights to Middelburg.
Around the city centre, there is a ring of 17th century parkland with the most amazing flora and a number of picturesque windmills. Eating out in Middelburg can be a memorable experience with a great diversity of cuisine to be found in the many restaurants and cafés. Take some time out to enjoy a relaxed meal at De Drvkkery amidst the most wonderful bookshops with an expansive assortment of books and knickknacks. The quirky-named Espressobar Ko D'oooooooor is a bistro like no other. A visit to the De Mug will leave your palate tingling with their Mug Bitter, a house brand beer and notenwijn, a wine made from walnuts.
