About Metu

Metu is a woreda in the Illubador Zone of the Ethiopian region of Oromia. It is primarily a flourishing market town where several crops are sold. But this town exports coffee primarily which, in turn, brings in a lot of foreigners. Actually, nearby Gambela is included in the Ethiopia and Egypt trading route for hundreds of years. Cheap flights to Metu are available in case you want to come here to explore the beautiful town.

The woreda has a lot of swampy areas with lush vegetation so this is the perfect place for bird watchers. There are so many savannah birds found here, which surprises so many biologists because these can be typically viewed in countries like Gambia and Ghana. One will see various species of Kingfishers, doves, honey birds, and horn bills, among so many others. Traveling birdwatchers will be glad to find a lot of related literature in bookstores in town: ‘Where to Watch Birds in Ethiopia’ and the ‘Birds of the Horn of Africa’ are some of the books which can be bought in this area.

This place is also known for the Sor Waterfalls. This is located specifically in Bechu, only a little over 10 kilometers from the center of this market town. The 3-hour drive is a bit of a challenge and then you need to walk the rest of the way for another hour or two. However, your tired muscles and the overall exhaustion are all worth it. The sight is one of the most beautiful things that you will see on God’s green earth.

There are a few hotels in Metu and some can only accommodate 50 or so people at a time. Some hotel rates are much more expensive here than in other small towns in the country. One night may cost $50 or even more, especially during peak seasons. Now that this place is becoming more and more popular spot for tourists, some locals are thinking of opening more so that their guests will really feel welcome and comfortable.

Traveling to this town is not so difficult anymore since cheap flights to Metu can be booked. One just needs to travel 175 km (4 hours or so) from Gambela, where the nearest airport is.
