About Medias

Medias, Sibiu County’s second-largest town, is located in the Târnava Mare River’s second basin in close proximity to the famous Bazna health resort. The town possesses one of the nation’s best-preserved historical centres and medieval fortifications and has emerged as a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international tourists, especially due to the plentiful availability of cheap flights to Medias.

With an existence stretching to the middle Neolithic, like other towns of this age, it was also heavily fortified; the church of St. Margaret represent the town’s core which the town developed with its characteristic narrow winding alleys, traditional houses and a mammoth square surrounded by vibrantly-coloured facades. The characteristic architecture is a good enough reason for many to fly down on one of the many cheap flights to Medias.

The 15th century St. Margaret Evangelical Church standing on the site of a Roman basilica is enclosed by a double wall and several towers, one of which served as a prison. The Church features three magnificent examples of gothic altarpieces, early 15th century murals and colorful baroque organ besides bronze artifacts of the 14th century and Oriental carpets. The Trumpeters’ Tower, added in 1450 to the town’s defense, served to warn against enemy attack, features an 1880-clock showing the moon phases. Franciscan Church and Monastery, originally built in 1444, was subsequently done up in baroque style to which an altar in the rococo manner was later added. The County History Museum has an interesting collection of artifacts and exhibits tracing the development of the region through the centuries.

The surrounding countryside has more than a dozen fortified churches, typical of the prevailing construction style at the time; the Fortified Church at Valea Viilor, built n 1263, features gothic architecture and some impressive fortifications that were added later. Inside, there are some superb examples of 16th century Saxon furniture. The Fortified Church at Mosna sports late gothic-style architecture. The Fortified Church at Biertan, standing on a hill, is protected by 35-feet high walls; this former seat of Lutheran bishops is among the most famous churches. The Bazna Spa, celebrated for its therapeutic mineral water springs, is a good alternative to many hotels in Medias.
