Located in Italy’s Foggia province, Manfredonia is a seaside town that attracts lots of footfalls throughout the year. It was set up way back in 1256 by Emperor Frederick II’s son Manfred. It was fortified with a grand castle, remains of which can still be seen. Over the centuries, it has emerged as a noncommercial low-key resort. The formidable fortress of the town, Castello Svevo-Aragonese, is a visual treat for travelers. It now houses a museum and both the castle and the National Archaeological Museum are open for visit. A few towers were added after the construction of the castle got completed. The Manfredonia Cathedral made in 1680 was set up after destroying an older gothic Cathedral. The bell tower of the Cathedral was set up few years after the edifice was built. It contains some important medieval artwork samples.
There are some other religious edifices that you can see like the Church of San Domenico and Church of San Benedetto. The church has 4 altars and a few paintings. There is also the Church of San Francesco which was set up in the 14th century. Another church worth mentioning is Church of Santa Chiara with a 17th century origin. The Piazza del Popolo is where the city center is located and the Town Hall is close to it.
After you complete touring Manfredonia, it may be worthwhile to explore the neighboring village of Siponto. This is a nice seaside resort known for its sea and serene beach.
