Mandalay is Myanmar’s old capital and one of the largest cities in the region. This city has an abundance of good history, religious sights, and breathtaking landscape that make people from all walks of life visit and explore the place. Though it’s not the current capital city, Mandalay remains one of the main trade centers in the country.

Many religious locations can be found in the city. At the bottom of the Mandalay hill for example lays Kuthodaw Paya which contains the largest and definitely the most complete book that contains the sacred texts of their religion. The Maha Myat Muni Paya is also a sacred place where a gold 4 meter Buddha adorned with exquisite stones can be found. Other sacred places that are being frequented by tourists in Mandalay are the Shwenandaw Monastery, the Shwe Kyi Myin Paya, and the Sandamuni Paya.

When you’re in the city you surely won’t miss the Royal Palace which has always been the focal point of the place. This beautiful structure contains most of the country’s prized collections throughout the century. Other things that you should check out in Mandalay are the Moustache Brothers, the Muhamuni Paya, and the Mandalay and Waterfall Hills.

Dining

With the influence of various nations, Mandalay has a lot to offer when it comes to food. Aside from the many noodles, veggies, and meat specialties, the city is also known for its very sweet dessert called Htou Moun.

Of course, mid-range and high class hotels can also be found if you have the money to spend and want a better place to stay.

Getting Around

Taxis, trishaws, and motorcycle are common, they are the preferred form of transportation if you want to move around the city without problems, the cheapest though is bicycle and many people in Mandalay use this to move around the city.
