About Malabo

Malabo, the capital city of Equatorial Guinea can be found on Bioko Island. As the largest city in the country, Malabo offers a rich historical sense with its many tourist attractions.

The city was a British colony back in the late 1820's. Eventually, Malabo became a naval station for freed slaves. One of the descendants of the first freed slaves who resided in the city is the Fernandinos. After being dominated by the Spanish, Malabo was renamed Santa Isabel and became the capital in 1969. In 1973, President Francisco Macias Nguema ordered the reverting of the cities back to its indigenous African names.

Visit the office of the Bioko Biodiversity Program and be more informed about the city’s wildlife. You can also buy postcards from the office which you can use as souvenirs. Also, take a trip at the Universidad Nacional de Guinea Ecuatorial. The Spanish-built campus features a statue of the current Ecuatorial Guinea president, Teodoro Obiang.

Despite being the capital city, Malabo still has few paved roads. Taxis are available within the city and come in with very cheap rates. Note that nighttime rates are usually higher. Taxis are quite rare during the night as police patrollers enforce strict traffic rules during this time.
