About Maia

Maia is a city located in Porto in the municipality of the same name. This city of northern Portugal is not very large and includes parishes of Maia, Vermoim and Gueifaes. This city with 35,625 inhabitants is a little known name but those who do know catch cheap flights to Maia to enjoy and relax in the serene atmosphere of the place. From 1902, Maia was known as a vila or small town. However, the status of a city was granted to the place in 1986.

The airport of Porto is located at Maia. Not only is the place Porto’s suburb but it is also a city that is self-sustaining, with its major industry being textiles. The city, in fact, is quite industrialized and has a number of companies belonging to different industries. There are two extremely important sports organisations in the city – Uniao Ciclista da Maia, the cycling team and FC Maia, the football club.

The Church of Saint Francis or Igreja de Sao Francisco is Oporto’s most prominent and famous Gothic monument. The inner decoration is of Baroque style and extremely delicate. The church is located right on the city’s centre. This site has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site which attracts many tourists who take cheap flights to Maia.

The Baroque church namely Clerigos Church is another popular tourist destination. Its most characteristic symbol is its giant bell tower which can be seen from many points of Maia. The Italian painter and architect Nicolau Nasoni had built the church for Brotherhood of Clerigos.

A historical square of Maia is the Ribeira Square. While booking hotels in Maia, tourists can book a hotel near this place due to the wealth of attractions that can be witnessed nearby. UNESCO has also designated the site as a World Heritage one. The square near the Douro river is a centre for intense manufacturing and commercial activity since Middle Ages. There is a monumental fountain in the square’s northern part with a statue on its niche.

Other notable laces which are must-visit destinations are Vila Nova de Famalicao, Sao Joao National Theatre, Rotunda da Boavista and Estadio do Dragao.
