In the Kanto region of Honshu Island in Japan, you will see a mountain called Mt. Akagi. At the foot of this mountain lies the city of Maebashi-shi, which is the capital city of the Gunma Prefecture. The Tone River is running on the west part of the city. If you will visit Maebashi-shi, expect a humid subtropical weather and during winter, you will feel dry winds and dry winter with long days than night. The city is the house for the Ogo Gion Festival.
The main point of entry to Maebashi if you are a foreigner will be the Narita Airport if you will come in by plane. Cheap flights to Maebashi-shi are available, and from the airport, you can take the airport limousine buses from Azalea and it will take less than four hours of travel and about ¥4500. Taking the train will be the most inexpensive way to reach Maebashi-shi. If you want to try it, you have to take the JR Ryomo Line from Tokyo using the Joetsu Shinkansen train. Buses are also possible and cheapest means to get to Maebashi. The buses operating here are Nippon Chuo Buses, Tokai Liner, Sendai Liner and Silk Liner. It is recommended to know the bus and train station inn Maebashi-shi in order to get around the city. From 2010, bike rentals have been offered and you can get it from JR East Maebashi Station.
One of the places you should visit here is the Green Dome Maebashi which is a wonderfully designed and made domed stadium located in the Maebashi Park. This place holds exhibitions and indoor sports events. You can see Keirin races here or the pari-mutuel bicycle races. If you want to see flower garden here, visit the Ogo Green Flower Pasture. Go to Kencho, at the prefectural government building to have a nice view of the city and the Mt. Akagi. Here, you have to try the Yakimanjyu, this is a fried manjyu. You have to visit the restaurant called Saiwaisenbei that offers the “Seven Gods of Good Fortune rice cracker”, which is very popular rice cracker here.
There are several affordable hotels in Maebashi-shi and some of them are near the train station. If you want to have affordable tour in the city, book in advance to get cheap flights to Maebashi-shi as well as hotel accommodations.
