The Doi Nang Non ("sleeping woman mountain") dominates the view from the district of Mae Chan in the northern province of Chiang Rai of Thailand. This hilly region is noted for its hillside settlements with its handicrafts industry of silverware and women cloth.
Doi Nang Non is a karstic formation dotted with caves and waterfalls notably the Tum Luang cave with its stalactites and stalagmites, and the natural pond of Khun Naam Nang Non. Legend has it that the water that flows from above is the tears of a ghost lady.
Some 40 km away from Mae Chan is the village of Santi Khiri noted for its charming scenery of fruit trees, coffee and tea. The best time to come is in December and January. Visitors can have a relaxing time savoring the distinctive taste of the Oolong tea in one of the Village’s tea shops surrounded by cherry trees in full bloom after a leisurely trek to the hill side villages.
Mae Chan District is along Route 110 which is connected to route 1149, where the Wat Phra That Doi Tung is located. The temple containing the left collar bone of Buddha is considered by the northern Buddhists as a very important place of worship. Along the same route is the royal residence of Doi Tung Royal Villa built in 1990 for the then Princess Mother. The Palace is noted for its beautiful gardens of western flowers and trees and Switzerland inspired setting which is a big attraction to local and foreign tourists. Fronting the royal villa is the Mae Fa Luang Garden of rock and palm gardens, ornamental plants and a fountain.
