Loulé is located on Portugal’s south coast in central Algarve with its long history which many believe goes back to 400 BC. The very number is ample proof of the fact that the history of the town is long and eventful. This interesting town is quite near to Faro, just 6 km north from it. Every year, many tourists take cheap flights to Loulé and feast their eyes on the many architectural and historical landmarks and sites.
For many people who take cheap flights to Loulé, visiting Nossa Senhora da Piedade Church is very important. This landmark church building is built in modern dome shape which may remind onlookers of some space ship. There are numerous good shops, banks, swimming pools, sports pavilions, art galleries and hotels in Loulé, all the amenities that the modern man can think about. Those visiting Loulé must go to the Saturday morning gipsy market which is a famous attribute of the town. The daily market is also quite good and is held on Praca da Republica’s market hall styled in Arabian fashion. The market remains open every morning except Sunday.
Loulé’s main church is Igreja de S. Clement and the square where it is located has a beautiful, small but peaceful garden to its left called Jardim dos Amuados which is also an ancient Arab cemetery.
One very important and must visit place is the Loulé castle built during 13th to 14th century. The castle has no visible walls and there is a municipal museum in the castle courtyard. The remains of the castle have been well preserved. Near to the castle is Convent of Espirito Santo which houses a municipal art gallery which must be visited.
Those planning to visit the town and deciding about the timing should try to visit the place during February so that they can experience the Loulé carnival which is one of Loulé’s biggest events. It happens over 3 days with Shrove Tuesday being the 3rd and last day. The dancing, music and general partying make the event colourful and are sure to remind everyone of the famous Brazilian carnivals.
