Long Xuyen is a city in the province of An Giang and serves as its capital. It is situated in the southwestern portion of Vietnam. The cities nearby are Hanoi and Ho Chin Minh City. It is only 45 kilometers from Cambodia.
Long Xuexen serves as the passing route to Chau Doc on the way to Cambodia. One of the best attractions of this prosperous city is its basa fish, a type of catfish being exported worldwide. It is very popular in Australia and U.K as a cheap alternative for white fish. The city also offers the best mam thai and thot not with coconut cream and meat.
You can reach Long Xuyen either by bus or boat. You can take the bus from Mien Tay bus station and the fare will coast you around 35,000 Vietnam dollars. You can also take the boat from D Pham Hong Thai. Travel time is about nine hours and ferry ticket costs around 15,000 Vietnam dollars. If you want to save, rent a motorbike instead as it is the common public transport around the city.
There is a small airport in the city (Long Xuyen airport) that serves cheap flights to Long Xuyen. If you are coming from other places in Vietnam there are airports closer to the city like Can Tho Airport which is only 52.74 miles from Long Xuyen. Other cheap flights to Long Xuyen use this airport.
Since Long Xuyen only serves as a passing route to Chau Doc, the best thing to do here is to taste Long Xuxen food which is always serves hot with Pho beef noodles. It’s surprising that southern version of the Pho beef noodles taste much better than in Hanoi.
However, if you love roaming around, you can enjoy the countryside while riding in your rented motorbike (be sure you got license) and enjoy the rice paddies, the riverside, the market and the daily routines of the rural folks. If you want to see a museum, you won't get frustrated as there is a small park and museum dedicated to Long Xuyen local boy; former president Ton Durc Thang.
If you stay longer, there are hotels in Long Xuyen that offer best Vietnamese hospitality. If you want a few days of quiet life, Long Xuyen is the best place to be while exploring the Mekong River and its nearby cities.
