Lier is an impressive municipality in Antwerp, a Belgian province. It is famous for its patron saint ‘St. Gummarus’, its authentic beers and the popular tart 'Lierse vlaaikes'. The 14th century Town Hall was typically an example of Rococo architecture or late Baroque style and had a unique pediment bearing the city’s coat of arms. It was built by Van Baurscheit from 1740 to 1745. The town hall showcases exclusive paintings, including those of Isidoor Opsomer, a highly reputed local painter. Adjacent to the Town Hall lies the Belfry Tower crowned with four tiny corner turrets dating back to 1911. There are many splendid houses in the town square, complementing these two magnificent buildings. Some of the houses flaunt beautiful 16th century Renaissance columns.
The Cornelius Tower is situated in Lier, quite close to Antwerp. The tower is the last surviving remains of the medieval fortifications. Presently, it is referred to as the Zimmer Tower as it houses the renowned works by famous watchmaker and self-tutored astronomer, Louis Zimmer. You may not have a passion for clock-making but still it is worth arriving on one of the cheap flights to Lier to visit the famous tower, housing the three world famous masterpieces including the amazing Jubilee Clock, the wonderful Astronomical Studio inside the tower and also the fascinating Wonder Clock in a close-by pavilion. Just behind this church is the less significant 13th century Saint Peter’s Chapel. It is believed to be the most ancient building surviving till today.
