Next to Port Moresby, Lae is the largest city in Papua New Guinea and an important port and business center. Located in the eastern Papua New Guinea, it is the starting point of the Highlands Highway which serves as the link to major cities of the country.
A major attraction is the Amelia Earhart Memorial, the first female aviator to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in a solo flight, who stopped last at Lae in her attempt to circumnavigate the world. Lae Botanical Gardens is home to different species of birds. More species of birds and exotic flora can be found at the Rain Forest Habitat. To get acquainted with the culture of the country, the place to visit is the industrial and agricultural Morobe Show. For a weekend of sightseeing, go to the tourist spot of Mt. Lunaman in the southeast. There is also a fishing club, the Go to the Lae Game Fishing Club that can arrange a charter for the fishing enthusiast itching for a chance to hook a yellow-finned tuna or a blue marlin. Other game fish that are caught are the Wahoo, Spanish mackerel and the Sailfish.
The top hotels in Lae are the Lae International Hotel with more than 100 rooms and four suites, Hotel Melanesian surrounded by a luxuriant tropical garden, Buablung Haus Hostel and Klinkii Lodge. Within walking distance from the town center is the Lae Travellers Inn with deluxe, standard and budget rooms. Huon Gulf Lodge is conveniently situated next to the Lae Botanical Gardens.
Reasonably priced fresh food from the local produce is aplenty in Lae. There are also eating places friendly to the budget conscious travelers who want to avoid the more expensive and pricey restaurants.
Four airlines operate out of Nadzab Airport, with cheap flights to Lae from Port Moresby, Goroka, Mt. Hagen, Hoskins and other town and cities in Papua New Guinea. . Travelers coming from outside the country will have to fly to the Port Moresby Airport and take a connecting cheap flight to Lae. The city may also be reached by car or boat.
Tourists are cautioned from driving around the city because of safety concerns, aside from the fact that for hire vehicles are expensive.
