La Louvière, also known as the City of Wolves, is a city in Wallonia, Belgium. It is approximately 30 minutes from Brussels. The city, with a population of about 77,000 is a confluence of cultures and is considered to be a hub of flawless dynamism, mirth and warmth. The true mirth of the town is revealed during Laetare, the Carnival. Named after the Latin verb meaning “enjoyment”, the carnival is a three-day affair, from Sunday to Tuesday, beginning in the middle of the Lent period. The Gilles, a famous group of performers, attend each year, dancing to their unique music and handing oranges to observers. The end of this festival of merry-making is marked by Brûlage des Bosses, a custom where a puppet is burnt to symbolize the end of a carnival and advent of new life.
