About La Carlota

Located in Negros Occidental, the city of La Carlota is one of the Philippines’ lesser-known tourist destinations. Consisting of 14 barangays, the city’s populace mainly speaks the Hiligaynon dialect, but just like in most other parts of the country, the general public also understands Tagalog and English. Even before the arrival of the Spanish, La Carlota has always been an agricultural area. There was even a point in the city’s history where the Spanish government proclaimed La Carlota as one of only two chosen model farms in the country. Rice and tobacco are grown here as well, but sugar is known as the city’s top produce.

La Carlota is an ideal place to visit for those who are interested in exploring the heritage behind Negros’ sugar industry. To get to the region of Negros Occidental, there are cheap flights to La Carlota that are easily searchable online. A two-hour drive will bring you to La Carlota’s main attractions. These include the “Iron Dinosaurs,” nine charming steam locomotives that have been in use since the Spanish era. Originally intended to deliver harvested sugarcanes to the mills, the locomotives are now used to transport tourists around the Central Azucarera de La Carlota. The late 1920’s ancestral house is one of the tour’s highlights. Other attractions are the ruins of the Muscovado Sugar Mills and the La Granja Agricolas which originated in 1881.

The city also has something to offer nature lovers. Most popular is the Mount Kanlaon Natural Park. Tourists will enjoy the scenic views and serene atmosphere that are to be found in this 25,000-hectare expanse. There are affordable hotels in La Carlota for travelers who only prefer a day tour through the park. For those who enjoy camping, however, the Guintubdan Nature Camp located at the bottom of Mount Kanlaon conveniently offers tents and other amenities for rent.
