If you hear about Kawasaki, you will definitely hear about the Kanamara Matsuri or the Iron Penis Festival. It is the most popular even held annually in this city that’s located between Tokyo and Yokohama.
Kanamara Matsuri is held every first Sunday of April. During the festival, several penis-laden temple floats are paraded on the streets. There are also penis-shaped and vagina-shaped popsicles, candies, and other souvenirs. Sex paraphernalia are also on sale all over.
Then again, Kawasaki is more than just about Kanamara Matsuri. You would not take cheap flights to Kawasaki just to see the event along with thousands of transvestites that make up more than half of the audience.
Although this city is not as modern and chic as Tokyo or Yokohama, it has since embraced modernization. Many changes were made, especially on the areas around the station area. There are now food hubs that may not be as popular as other culinary joints but still offers must-eat dishes and reasonably priced, too. Dipper Dan is a must try. It is a popular café that serves crepes, pasta, and gelato.
You may also circle the pubs in Kawasaki that offers happy-hour specials. One of the most popular is HUB Kawasaki, which is a British-style pub just a few minutes of walk away from the JR Kawasaki Station. Now that you know where to eat and drink out, make sure that you also do not miss the other attractions that the city is known for.
Your cheap flights to Kawasaki is definitely worth to see the World’s Shortest Escalator, which is at the entrance to the underground carpark of More’s department store. Another sight that’s worth your time and effort is the Wakamiya Hachiman-g? Shrine. At first sight, there seems nothing to be so special about this shrine. But if you know that it is one of the few remaining fertility shrines in Japan, you would definitely make a run for it.
Of course, you would not want to miss the Summer fireworks display. Although some are set off from Tokyo and some from Kanagawa, staying in any of the hotels in Kawasaki is your best place to watch the night sky light up.
