If you want a Japanese destination for the whole family, try Kawaguchi city in Saitama Prefecture. Book cheap flights to Kawaguchi online, and arrive at either Narita or Haneda Airport.
Remember that Japan’s extensive railway system is the main means of travel within the Honshu, the largest island in the Japanese archipelago. From Narita Airport, take the JR Narita Express to Tokyo Station and change to the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line. From Haneda, ride the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsu-cho or the Keiyuu Line going to Tokyo Station, and to the Keihin-Tohoku Line to arrive at Kawaguchi station.
Kawaguchi-shi is merely 29 minutes away from Tokyo, and is a very favorable destination in Japan. Goods are mostly cheaper here, and it’s just minutes away from the heart of Japan. It would save you a good deal of money if you would book cheap flights to Kawaguchi and start your Japan tour from there, instead of going to Tokyo directly. Kawaguchi is located in Saitama prefecture, and not to be confused with Kamaguchi-ko, one of the five sacred lakes surrounding Mt. Fuji.
The whole family would certainly enjoy their stay in Kawaguchi Green Center. This botanical garden is 160,000 square meters large, with a very extensive design of azaleas, artificial waterfalls and rock formations. It was designed as a recreational park for adults, but the kids would certainly enjoy the 600-meter mini railway going through the center as well as the large-scale playground. There is an entrance fee to go into the Center.
You may also want to look into the Municipal Art Gallery, where you can see works from local artists. It is also ideal for painters looking for exhibition areas near Tokyo. There is a shopping center nearby if you’re looking for souvenir shops in Kawaguchi. It is said that both the shopping center and the art gallery are located on the former Sapporo brewing factory.
Most Japanese tourists stay at hotels in Kawaguchi if they want to go to downtown Tokyo. There is a Kawaguchi Station Hotel where you can reserve rooms for as low as $50. If you are looking for a more upgraded hotel, and you would not mind to splurge a little, you can stay at Marks-Inn Nishi Kawaguchi Hotel and Kawaguchi Centre Hotel.
