About Kamakura

If you are familiar with Japanese History, you've probably heard of the Kamakura Period that reigned in Japan from 1185 to 1333. This period was led by the Kamakura Shogunate and this is the period wherein samurai, feudalism and warrior caste in Japan began. This history took place in the city of Kamakura that is located in the Kanagawa Prefecture. The city is about 50 km in the southern southwest part of Tokyo. The city is fairly small, about 40 square km in area, but surrounded by hills in the northern, eastern and western parts and the Sagami Bay in the south. It is because of this that the city is considered to be a natural fortress. By the way, during the Kamakura Period, this small city became the capital of Japan.

As foreigner visitor wanting to know the history in Kamakura, your main point of entry is the Tokyo Narita Airport. There are several carriers offering cheap flights to Kamakura via Narita Airport. Take the regular commuter train of the JR that departs the airport every hour and this will cost you about less than a thousand yen. If your main point of entry is the Haneda Airport in Tokyo, you have to ride the Keikyu Line Airport Express going to Kanazawa – Bunko or Shin – Zushi and then change train to Yokohama Station going to Yokosuka Line. If you want the cheapest way to get around this small city rent a bike or walk.

Being a historical place, you have to go to Central Kamakura wherein you will see the Myohonji Temple and the Tsurugaoka Hachiman – gu Shrine. If you will tour the Hase or Western Kamakura area, you have to see Hasedera, Kotokuin, Zenairai Benten Shrine. If you try the northern part of the city, check out Meigesuin, Kenchoji, Engakuji and Kenchoji. In the eastern part, go to Shakado Kiritoshi, Jomyoji, Hokokuji and Sugimotodera. In the nearby areas, you can go to Yukai Sokai Taya, Taya Cavern and Suenosato. Since the city is full of natural wonders, do some outdoor recreation such as beach relaxation and hiking.
