Hoofddorp is the principal town of the municipality Haarlemmermeer in the North Holland province. The town whose name translates to “Main Village” came into being in 1853 with the draining of the Haarlemmermeer. Located just 20 km from Amsterdam, it has become extremely popular with tourists from all over the world flying in on any of the numerous cheap flights to Hoofddorp via Amsterdam. From the Schiphol International Airport, it is a one-stop 4-minute train ride to Hoofddorp.
After Hoofddorp was included in Amsterdam’s defence line in the late 19th century, a fort was constructed adjoining the main canal. A couple of batteries were situated in the now-outskirts of the city and the casemates were constructed to the town’s east. A dike was also constructed connecting the fort to the batteries and case mates and ultimately, the forts of Aalsmeer to the east and Vijfhuizen to the west. The area’s first windmill "De Eersteling" was erected in 1856 in the centre of the town but gradually stopped operation due to the increased construction activities and was subsequently relocated to fort Hoofddorp in 1977, where it is now working and has become a major tourist attraction.
Hoofddorp is a hub of tourist activity; in the summer (August-end), a mammoth festival titled Mystery Land is organised. The Concours Hippique, Meerliveas as well as Hoofddorp Culinair are held in the summer season. The Meer Jazz festival is also organised in the city centre in spring. For those who love shopping, Hoofddorp is a shopping paradise and likened by many as a big shopping mall. However, the town has somewhat limited dining opportunities and a virtually non-existent nightlife. The 3 bars are always crowded with young people, especially on Fridays; these joints close at 1 am on weekdays but extend their closure to an hour or so on weekends. The Relatie planet or a singles party held every month, usually on a Friday, is hugely popular. When you fly in on one of the plentiful cheap flights to Hoofddorp, one thing you can be sure of is finding an accommodation suited to your budget due to the presence of an abundance of hotels in Hoofddorp, being so close to the busy Schiphol airport.
