Hilversum, in Noth Holland’s Gooi area, is one of the nation’s first inhabited lands, archaeological evidence pointing to the early and mid-bronze age. Also known as “the Garden of Amsterdam”, it is famous for its green expanses and 650 species of trees, the largest variety in Holland. Nature lovers will appreciate the many parks and gardens in Hilversum, the most remarkable being the Pinetum Blijdenstein botanical garden that is home to a vast collection of endangered and rare specimens and conifers. At least half-a-dozen museums serve up the city’s rich heritage in diverse ways and are highly recommended for history connoisseurs. The surrounds of Hilversum are full of forests and heaths that are ideal for hiking trips or exploration on cycles.
