Hardenberg, situated in the Overijssel province of eastern Netherlands, is an ancient city dating back to the early 14th century and is a popular holiday destination with its excellent facilities for recreational and leisure activities, and loads of local attractions that bring in droves of tourists from all over the world via cheap flights to Hardenberg that is served by the airport at Groningen, just 77 km away.
Hardenberg is noted for its scenic vistas, especially the Reestdal, an ancient river valley landscape where the river Reest winds around 35 km through an area where flowery meadows, ancient hedgerows, ash, heath and forest alternate. The nature around the Reestdal comprising wet meadows, farm fields, wet heathland, forests and peat lakes that is home to many rare plants and animals is unique to this part of Netherlands. Spread over the municipality is over 600 kilometers of high-quality hiking. The walking network makes it even more attractive and easy for tourists visiting Hardenberg to explore the area on foot. There are also many cycling routes here; the annual Great Hardenburg Bicycle Race is an event to look forward to. Those fond of swimming have three lovely sites to choose from; the quality of the water is checked periodically to ensure its safe status.
With over 140 sports clubs, the town has a vibrant sports culture that is attractive to tourists flying in on the cheap flights to Hardenberg. The number of indoor and outdoor sports facilities is large and diverse. Six of the twelve municipal sports parks now have one or more artificial grass for football, hockey and/or basketball. The Hardenberg’s Walk of Fame is a tribute to athletes; each year, top athletes are invited to lay tiles in the footpath to the Amalia Muted Harbour Bridge along the river Vecht in the centre of Hardenberg to commemorate top athletic performances. Film and music is the theme of the Vechtdal Summer Festival. Looking at art in Hardenberg is also akin to looking at nature; Hardenberg is replete with examples of public art that is intrinsically related with various aspects of the town. Accommodation is not an issue with lots of hotels in Hardenberg available besides camping sites.
