China's Guilin city wouldn't be a favorite travel destination for nothing. The city centre itself is surrounded by picturesque mountains, rivers and lakes. That's why it's no wonder that tourism is very much alive in this side of the country.
Buses and taxis abound the city. Tourists can take advantage of Bus 58 as its route includes many top attractions. It also passes by the train station. Buses are the best bet for those who want to minimize cost. However, taxis are still relatively cheap and conveniently available.
Note though that the city is Mandarin-speaking. If you're being picked up at the airport, ensure that you have your hotel's name in Chinese. This cuts down the inconvenience of needing an interpreter for the taxi driver.
As any place in China, Yuan is the main currency in Guilin. You can convert money from any airport and banks. To maximize your budget, avoid having cash converted in hotels. You can also make use of your international ATM cards. However, take note that different home banks have varying charges for international usage. Ensure also that you use an ATM of your bank in your home country to avoid double charges.
Credit cards are accepted but limited to bigger shopping malls and popular hotels.
Guilin has a subtropical climate so expect hot summers and really cold winters. Summer is usually from June to September while winter months are from December to February. Pack for a rainy weather if your trip is sometime May, June, September and October. When is the best time to visit Guilin weather-wise? April and November offer the best weather for touring.
It is best to dress nicely to gain respect of the locals. Bring a good pair of clean shoes specialized for walking.
Get a good map of the city prior to your trip. This enables you to cut down any need to get a taxi. Also, having a detailed map informs you of the nearest train and bus stations which are more practical choices of transportation.
Never play with your chopsticks. Be very sensitive with the way you talk as locals do not like foreigners who raise their voice.
Guilin is best experienced if you just take in the customs and beauty of the place. It's one of the most recommended cities to visit in China as there are many resources even for first-time tourists.
