Grimbergen is a picturesque municipality located in Flemish Brabant, a Belgian province in the Flanders region. It enjoys major recognition because of its Norbertine abbey. It is mostly known to the world for the beer that was brewed here first. It boasts of having the world’s first Abbey Beer Museum. It could easily be called the land of grand castles. Prince Castle Ruin (Prinsenkasteel) is located to the north of Brussels. It was used for residential purposes by Lords of Grimbergen in the medieval era. It is situated on a tiny moated island among the forest known as ‘Prinsenbos’. Currently, the castle is in ruins and only the park remains. The moat of the Castle is currently used as a pond. The stables and the adjoining farmhouse called Guldendal still remains. The 17th century Guldendal is a brilliant example of Renaissance style architecture and was made of traditional sandstone and bricks. It was previously used as a coach-house by the castle residents but currently it houses some exhibition rooms and the Museum of the Old Techniques.
Another tourist hotspot is the magnificent church of Grimbergen Abbey which was devoted to the city’s patron saint, Saint Servatius. This church was founded in 1128 and since then has been rebuilt time and again. The present building is a wonderful Baroque masterpiece and dates back to 1660. It has a tower that boasts of a 49-bell carillon. The church was designated the title of basilica in the year 1999. The Grimbergen Beer Museum is a must visit and tourists get a chance to taste the renowned local brew. This superb museum retraces the origin and gradual evolution of this special local beer. It has an exhibition hall displaying authentic exhibits, a room for beer tasting and a projection room. Come and stay in one of the many hotels in Grimbergen.
