Genk is a Belgian city and municipality located in the Limburg province, near Hasselt. It is situated on the Albert Canal between Liège and Antwerp, and is one of the most important industrial cities in the Flanders district. Voted “Europe’s Friendliest City (2009)”, it is an exciting tourist location as well. Tourists may now avail cheap flights to Genk.
Genk started off as a Celtic village. Christianity was introduced here in the 10th century. The remains of a small wooden church from that era have also been discovered. In 1901, a large reserve of coal was discovered here. The city soon attracted immigrants, both Belgian and foreign, and developed into the second-biggest city of Limburg. It is now an industrial center with the Ford Motors Body & Assembly factory as the foremost employer.
Genk, however, is not only an industrial town but also a big tourist attraction. A number of cultures have influenced its architecture, leading to an outstanding array of buildings. Bokrijk is an open-air museum with displays of authentic 17th to 19th century buildings relocated from all over Flanders. In summer, the area’s rich culture is brought to life thanks to various plays and re-enactments. Tourists can enjoy this unique city thanks to cheap flights to Genk. The city was also established as one of the gateways to the Hoge Kempen National Park in 2006.
The historic coal mines of Waterschei, Winterslag and Zwartberg are located here. Some of the mine buildings and residential areas can be visited and are tremendously fascinating. Other places worth visiting are De Maten, a nature reserve, and Kattevennen, a recreational area which has the Euro-Planetarium, a hotspot for tourists.
The Motives Festivalis is an annual event which is hosted here. A colorful carnival is also conducted around Ash Wednesday, which includes a flower parade, a number of musical, dance and performing events and a huge firework display. In 2012, the city hosted the European Biennial of Contemporary Art also known as the Manifesta. Genk is rich in culture and heritage and is a favorite tourist attraction.
