Genet is a small town in the southern portion of Ethiopia and also known as Genet Limmu. The town was once known as Suntu Town and situated in the Jimma Zone. It functions as the seat of government of Limmu Kosa district. Genet is connected by rail trail to Welkite, one of the most prosperous towns in southwestern Ethiopia.
Not to be mistaken to Wondo Genet which is a resort town in the Sidama Zone of SNNPR, Genet serves as a stopover for travelers heading to and from Kenya. Several small hotels in Genet for these travelers are dotted around the town's center but the best accommodation is found outside the town.
There is no better public transport than the mini bus but taking a private car would cut the trip to 3 hours instead of the usual bus trip of 5 hours.
Genet town became an important woreda in the Jimma Zone as an area for coffee drying. The town’s fertile land is suited to coffee plantation and the coffee industry brings substantial benefits to the local residents. You can find small café shops offering transient travelers a taste of its coffee. The coffee is commonly served in small cup with sugar on the cup’s bottom as the coffee may taste a little bit bitter because of its strong flavor. This strong variety of coffee serves as Genet’s pride and attraction.
There is a Tuesday market located in the west center of the town. This is a good market to buy Ethiopian goods such as banana and avocado. Travelers are treated to wide choices of spices and some handicrafts like baskets and pots and clay vases. The Tuesday Market is also an opportunity to photograph the local residents who are always willing to have their pictures taken. Sometimes a small fee makes them more aggressive for some photo shoots.
Because there is no airport in Genet, and there is no direct flights to this small town and all cheap flights to Genet are directed to Jimma Airport and Ethiopian Airlines is the only airline company that serves cheap flights to Genet.
