The earthquake that ravaged the city in 1997 did cause damage to some monuments but the administration has done well to do some good restoration job. You may start touring the town from its center – the Piazza della Repubblica. Here, you will find the impressive duomo. The Palazzo Comunale with its Neo-Classical façade is on the opposite side. The duomo has 2 facades and it received a number of facelifts over the centuries, the last one being in the 20th century. The Palazzo Comunale with its 13th century origin also underwent several restorations. Its tower was destroyed in the 1997 quake.
The Palazzo Trinci, standing at the piazza’s western side, houses the Museo Archeologico and Pinacoteca Communale. The inside of Palazzo Trinci is replete with several paintings and frescoes from the bygone days of glory. From the piazza, you can proceed through Via Gramsci and see some of the nice 16th century edifices of the city like Palazzo Deli.
